The History
It should come as no surprise that Jimmy Choo has established himself as the master of elegant footwear since shoemaking is part of his upbringing and heritage. Choo was born in Malaysia in 1961 and is part of a long line of shoemakers. It is said that he made his first shoe at the age of 11, and got his technical education in the field from the Cordwainers’ Technical College in London, which today is part of the London College of Fashion. He first launched his brand of handmade shoes in 1986 in London, and only two years later, was lucky enough to see his designs featured in the prestigious Vogue magazine, which really set his career in motion. His regular clientele quickly grew to include Princess Diana, which further cemented his success.
In 1996, Choo partnered with British Vogue accessories editor Tamara Mellon to create Jimmy Choo Ltd. The flagship store is located in London and about 25 or so other locations exist around the world. Under this broader umbrella, the brand has expanded to include couture footwear and a ready-to-wear line that even includes select handbags and other accessories. In 2001, Choo sold his share of the company, but continues to design his desirable haute couture shoes.
